Drinking With The Jackass......

Ok, you want viticulture history? How about family history? How about both and some historical wines? Well, then you must visit Martinelli Winery. One of the famed vineyards that Martinelli gathers their fantastic fruit from is Jackass Hill, where the Zin of the same name comes from. At the bottom of the hill is Jackass Vineyard, where another Zin of the same name comes from. The hill is historic from both a family and wine point of view. The hill is on a 60 degree slope, more than even allowed in Sonoma County! The family has been producing mucho superior Zin’s from these two venues for decades. Up until a few years ago, Helen Turley was the consulting winemaker at Martinelli, and the results of her expertise, the wines continue to show her influence and that of current winemaker Bryan Kvamme and consulting winemaker Erin Green. The Martinelli tasting room is located in an historic old hop barn on River Road just a few short miles off of Hwy.101. Also located in that tasting room, given the time of day, you might find Rick Fraga pouring you some of the wineries selection of heaven sent wines. With Rick being an experienced wine educator, I would bet any amount of money that you can’t come up with a question about the surrounding area, terroir, wines, or wineries that Rick can’t answer. The tasting room itself is almost like a wine museum and specialty shop. If you want to bring a great wine related gift home to a friend, Judy would be more than happy to help you complete your shopping right there! BUT, the best reason to visit is obviously for the wines. Here you'll not only find those historic Zins, but some of the best Pinot Noir’s, Syrah’s and Chardonnay’s around. If you’re one of those that like your wine somewhat sweeter…but not too sweet, try the “just right” Vigneto di Evo Zinfandel. Talk about a great pizza wine!! All in all, your visit to this historical winery, meeting the people and enjoying some of the best world class wine anywhere on the planet, this is for sure one of those "bucket list" venues! You will be back!
